Counterfeits and Customs

The firm is experienced in proceedings that aim to fight against counterfeit trademark goods. It normally takes part in proceedings where counterfeit goods are confiscated and then destroyed, according to the relevant proceedings.

Although Uruguay is not an attractive market for the commercialization of counterfeit goods, because of its reduced population (about 3.4 million people), Uruguay is a country of transit where huge amounts of goods go through to Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay as final destination.

All "transit" goods are subject to the Intellectual Property rules of Uruguay. Especially, all transit goods are subject to the Uruguayan Trademark Act, and in case these transit goods infringe the trademark rights, they shall be liable to penalties.
